No doubt you are right that the Jewish concept of God means different things to different people. To me, I always get stuck on the sense that God is a consciousness that wants, commands, judges. That may be a simplistic understanding, but the language surrounding traditional Jewish practice leads me to this sense of it. I like the parts of Jewish practice that focus on being ethical in our actions.

Based on my study and experience, I'm not sure there's one "Jewish concept" of God. Years ago when learning Jewish meditation I was asked, "has your concept of God changed since you began this course?" My answer was and remains, "I try not to have one." For most of us, most of the time the choice is between idolatry and some form of agnosticism. The rest of the time we tell ourselves stories that hint at the mystery of Being and Nothingness being One.

I would never have been able to communicate those thoughts but I feel and think very much the same way. As we say in Costa Rica "Pura Vida".

A high school friend posted this on Facebook. I wanted to preserve it here on Jubuhoo. Thanks Mike!

I just checked out your latest blog entry...reminded me of the 27th verse of the Tao Te Ching...(mitchell's translation)

A good traveler has no fixed plans
and is not intent upon arriving.
A good artist lets his intuition
lead him wherever it wants.
A good scientist has freed himself of concepts
and keeps his mind open to what is.

Thus the Master is available to all people
and doesn't reject anyone.
He is ready to use all situations
and doesn't waste anything.
This is called embodying the light.

What is a good man but a bad man's teacher?
What is a bad man but a good man's job?
If you don't understand this, you will get lost,
however intelligent you are.
It is the great secret.
